  • Sticky About Me

This Blog is designed as an online diary to keep any family and friends who are interested up to date with the family.
I live next to the sea, in Hunstanton, West Norfolk, UK.
I am married to Bob with 4 children and 4 grandchildren, Steven married to Jude with Kira and Charlotte, Jenny married to Andy with Sophie and Dylan, then 2 stay at homes, Micheal and Kevin. We also have a retired Greyhound called Spot and an ageing cat called Penny.
I work full time in the family Business in Hunstanton, Jacksons the Shoe People, the business was started in Leicester in 1938 by my Grandfather and is now run by myself and my sister Debbie, we specialise in extra wide fitting shoes for problem feet. www.jacksons-shoes.co.uk
I am a Brownie Guider with 1st Hunstanton Brownies and am also a Joint Norfolk County Public Relations Advisor  with GirlguidingUK Norfolk. www.girlguidingnorfolk.org.uk.
I am also the secretary of 1st Hunstanton Scouts and Guides, represent Hunstanton Brownies on the Hunstanton in Bloom Committee, and am heavily involved in Hunstanton United Businesses.

  • Brownie Training

Today is Steven's 30th Birthday, i only saw him briefly and he was in a mood.

I took Bob to work, so he could collect his new car.

Then i went to work in the Calendar Club with Jenny, we had 19 cases delivered  by our friendly TNT driver, this took us nearly all day to put out because we were busy with customers, then about 2.30pm a  TNT driver came in wearing his TNT jacket and said he had a delivery of 42 cases for us, me and jen were stunned, we said couldn't be for us we had had our delivery, he said yes that was part of it, this is the rest, after continuing to pull our leg he finally told us that he lived in Kings Lynn and came in for a Calendar, and couldn't resist having a bit of fun and pulling our leg.

This evening me and jude went on a Brownie Guide training in Dersingham, about the Adventure Books, it was quite interesting, it was nice having someone to go with.  One unusual thing the trainer did was at the end of the training she gave everyone a postcard and asked them to fill in their name and address on one side and the other side write what we had gained from the training, then in the new year she is going to post it back to us.

    I finished reading
The Savage Garden by Mark Mills
Vanessa (our resident chiropodist) lent me this book, and unusual and interesting read.

  • Work

Today we had 2 reps, we had the DB rep, who bought us a tin of luxery biscuits this morning and this afternoon, we had the Padders rep, I have to say we gave him a hard time, and his leaving parting shot was, 'Goodbye Ladies' ' I wish I could say it has been nice seeing you',  and he didn't bring us anything for christmas, how mean.

  • Brownies

This morning while walking Spot i found her coat hung on a fencepost, so call off the search.

At Brownies we had a visitor from the deaf association, he taught us how to communicate with deaf people and how to sign our own name, then we finished by singing the first verse of Silent Night in Sign Language which was fun.

  • Bob's car

My Rover went kaputt, last week. The engine had been overheating a bit and was obviously the start of something nasty. According to the 'experts', there had been a head block crack or head gasket leak which had a consequential cause of a leak in the radiator. The nett result, blown engine. I have been told that the model was prone to it.

Since then I have been trying to work out an alternative. The Rover is off to a scrap yard and I have found a W reg Proton with only 37000 miles on the clock. It drives well, has 11 months MOT and the best bit, will only cost £295.

I collect it on Friday ready to tax it for the first of the month.

  • District Meeting

This morning me and Spot couldn't do our usual walk along the sea front, we couldn't see where the sea ended and the prom began, it was a high tide and the prom was awash, this evening we attempted going on the beach, but the sea was coming in thick and fast, and we thought better of it.

Spot has mislaid her coat, so if you see a  blue greyhound sized coat about, then it could be hers.

Tonight I attended a District Meeting for Smithdon and Brothercross Guide Association, it was held at Brancaster Staithe in a converted barn called Wol's House, there are 2 bedrooms downstairs, a small lounge and kitchenette upstairs, and everywhere is decorated with Winnie the Pooh memorabilia, i took my Brownies on a sleepover there earlier this year, it sleeps 8, it is lovely and cosy, with a log fire burning. It was a good friendly meeting.

    Today I finished reading

    Flood Tide by Clive Cussler
A Dirk Pitt, novel, very good, enjoyable read.

  • Hunstantons Christmas Lighting Up

This year Hunstanton had bran new christmas lights, they were switched on yesterday by the Dame, in the Priness Theatre Pantomine, Sleeping Beauty. There was also a parade of decorated minis, and the Town Band playing, the streets were crowded to watch the Lights come on.

And Jacksons what did we do, well the christmas lighting event is the only sunday a year we open, to make a splash we decided to give 25% off everything, we must be mad, we opened 11-3, and from 11 to 1, it was complete chaos, we were so busy, at one point near the till, we had a huge pile of shoeboxes and shoes that needed to be matched up, as we weren't getting time to put stock away.

  • So Cold

I have not been warm all day, it has been freezing.
The coast is on Flood Watch this weekend, when I walked Spot this evening it was bitterly cold, and a very high tide, it is surprising how many people were out with camcorders and cameras taking pictures of the sea

  • Bob and Health

These days, it is a fine line which has to be walked.

The double wammy of asthma and acid reflux means that constant medication has to be maintained to keep them both in check. Most of the time, it is not a problem, but the asthma is allergy induced, and the list of allergies is rather large, so there is no real control available other than living in a bubble. (Not an option)

The worst side effect of the asthma is the lack of co-ordination it can produce. Nothing drastic, but Bob is aware of the symptom.

Medication involves 3 inhalers and a set of tablets.

  • Kings Lynn Late Night Opening

It was a very cold day, we left home at 7.45am and arrived back home at 9pm.

I worked with Jenny in the Calendar Club all day, although i went into town a couple of times and enjoyed myself pottering about and getting bits for my cardmaking, after Bob finished work he joined us, and Andy bought the children up.

The Lights were switched on, there was reindeer, a band playing, santas procession, an ice rink, the lights look really nice this year.

When we got home Spot had been a nuisance, she had pee'd on kitchen floor and emptied the rubbish bin, however it had been a long day for her Kevin had walked her but he had forgot!!!! to feed her.

  • Kevins Turn

Kevin is now 16 and since September has attended 6th Form at Smithdon High School, he is studying AS Level Physics, Design and Technology and Art.

His future aim if everything works out is to be an Engineer or Pilot in the RAF.

Tonight was 6th Form Parents Evening, and overall the results seemed to be satisfactory, the only negative comment was lack of concentration especially if his girlfriend Louren walks by.

  • Stevens Hair Day

Yesterday the Christmas Windows were finished they look really nice very stylish.

On Monday Steven had his hair cut, YES really, he had his hair cut properly to a grade 3, surprisingly it suits him very well.

As i hadn't yet got round to giving him the link, Steven did a search on google for my blog and it came up 4th, not bad.

At Brownies tonight we had a man came to visit us and to discuss mobility, and he played a game with the Brownies, then after that I had a Girlguiding Division Meeting in Kings Lynn, a very interesting informative meeting.  I got home about 10.30pm.

Bob has decided to scrap the car and give up on it, this evening Bob attended a Regeneration Meeting on behalf of Hunstanton United Businesses of which he is Chairman.

  • A miserable cold day

I worked at the Calendar Club with Jenny, it was a long day, very cold and wet.

Bob took us but the car was not happy, then on the way home he limped into Lynn to pick us up and it finally died, and we had to call mum to collect us, so it was 7.30pm by the time we got home, we had been out for 12 hoursand we were cold, wet and tired, we left the car in Lynn to be sorted out tomorrow. And then to top it all, kevin had walked and fed Spot to help out, but she still had pee'd on the kitchen floor.

  • Jenny

Its has been a nice day, but oh so cold i don't think i will every get warm again. The shop christmas window is being done this week. There is a slight sign that my health is starting to improve.

Jenny attended a course this evening about A Taster of  Becoming a Teachers Assistant NVQ level 2, she felt this would go well with her Working with Children course she took earlier in the year. She ideally would like to be a Teachers Assistant, but her problem in proceeding is she has got to get a placement, and living in a small community, you have got to hit it at the right time to get a vacancy.

  • Church Service

Today I attended a Church Parade Service with my Brownies, the service was a Childrens service to bless the Shoe Box Appeal, My Brownies took part in a colour party with the rainbows, other brownies and guides, they took part in an activity and wrote and said a Prayer.

    It was a lovely service.

This evening the family came round for dinner.

  • Update on Sophie

Today me and Jen had a meeting with the Speech Therapist Amanda, It was a most positive helpful meeting.

The Speech Therapist said that Sophie has a very severe case, one of the worse she has come across of Verbal Dyspraxia. Sophie is going to be referred by her consultant to a Speech professional  (her title is a long mouthful) at Great Ormond Street London, where she will have a 3hr assessment for an Electronic Communication Aid (Finally..........), after she has been assessed, they have an electronic communication aid aid Library and she will be loaned an appliance, untill the right one is found, when the right appliance has been found Norfolk Primary Care Trust has agreed to purchase one. Brilliant!!!!!

Also this week following rising the profile in the press of Sophie, we have been contacted by West Norfolk Dyspraxia Association, every Saturday morning, they have a childrens club in Kings Lynn called The Dyscoverers Club, where they do activities, have outings ect, not only will this be good for Sophie, it will be good networking for Jen and Andy, to compare notes and make them realise they are not alone.  www.dyspraxiawn.org.uk

So since we contacted the press the developments we have had are:-

    Weekly Speech Therapy
Had contacts and offers of sympathy and support from 3 people
Contact by the local Dyspraxia Association, with Sophie joining their club
Action Plan put in place for Sophie to get an Electronic Communication Aid.

I can certainly say it was well worth doing, there has been a short follow up in the press  giving an update on Sophies progress, after a phone call from the reporter, as she is running a similar story about another child.

  • Not too good

I have had an awful night, feeling unwell, with coughing fits, this morning my throat is red raw through coughing and my chest is sore.

On walking Spot along the beach this morning it was lovely and clear, very mild, a pleasant walk.

Today started off badly and got progressively worse, once again Steven was unexpectedly there when i needed him the most, there seems to be this unbreakable link between us, that has amazed me more than once.   As i was upset, in the evening Bob bought me Harry Potter and the Order of Pheonix, a huge bar of Cadbury's Fruit and Nut and a Couple of Bottles to cheer me up.

    tn_Spot July 002

  • Brownies

After working all day i went to my Brownie meeting.

We are working on our Disability Awareness Badge, last week we had a lady from the blind association come in and talk about Braille and Moon reading and do some games using our senses with us.

This evening we had a Guide Dog Puppy come in and see us named Bennet, they also played some games which the Brownies Loved.

  • Sophie

This morning it was cold and dark on the beach when i walked Spot, I had a long day at Calendar Club, we found out today, that a Calendar Factory is opening in Kings Lynn, but although cheaper product, it does not appear to be same selection and quality, so we'll see, then I walked home, it was 7.30pm till i could have my tea and take it easy, it was pretty tiring.

This evening when Micheal came home from work, he presented me with some chocolates Ferraro Rocher, when asked what they were for, he said does he need a reason to give his mum a present, it made me feel so much better on an otherwise awful day, it bought tears to my eyes.

Sophie has been having speech problems since a toddler diagnosed as Verbal Dyspraxia although she has been taught sign language and is quite proficient. In September when still nothing was getting done we wrote to the Speech Therapy Department, Norfolk Primary Care Trust, and 3 letters to the Press The Lynn News sent a photographer and did an article on the family, the result of this is Sophie has now started weekly speech therapy sessions through the school, the speech therapist admitted if we hadn't wrote the letters nothing would have happened. Sophie is also becoming increasingly difficult with temper tantrums, we only assume the problem is making others understand her, is causing her distress.
A copy of the letter we sent is below.

We have a beautiful intelligent 7 yr old granddaughter named Sophie, she attends  Junior School, and 1st Hunstanton Brownies, however, she cannot talk, she has been diagnosed with Verbal Dyspraxia. You would think at age 7, there would be speech and therapy support, but you could not be more wrong. At age 3 while at playgroup, for 2 months she attended Speech Therapy department in Kings Lynn once a week, till told she could no longer attend, however they concentrated on her understanding and not her speech, there has never been a problem with her understanding, but they didn’t listen.  At age 3 she had a picture book to aid her communication, but this became too big and unmanageable. At age 5, we were told that a Speech Therapist would visit Sophie in school once a week, this never happened. Hunstanton First School have been brilliant and we can not fault them, they taught Sophie Sign language and gave her and the family a lot of support. Then at age 7 we had the worry of her moving up to Junior School, in a meeting with the relevant parties, it was agreed that Sophie would have an Electronic Communication Aid in time for the summer holidays, so she would be used to using it by the start of term, once again we were let down, they offered Sophie a picture book, like she had been using in the playgroup, which is just too limiting. The Headmaster  spoke to the Speech Therapy Department and the most they could offer was a copy of all the exercises Sophie had been doing at the First School, this is not necessarily wrong, but it still does not help her to communicate.

Sophie needs help in communicating, she is getting angry and frustrated because  she cannot make people understand, and it is becoming a real problem, we are getting quite desperate and just don’t know where to go for help.   We are constantly being fobbed off by the Speech and Language Department.

  • A cold blustery November day

There had been another very High Tide, me and Spot had to walk against the sea wall to prevent being splashed.  Although a fine morning, it is very cold and windy, sky a wonderful soft blues and pinks, very
    pretty.
Vanessa our resident chiropodist, was upset today, she is having her 11 yr old dog Aisha a German Shepherd put down today.
This evening after work on walking Spot, it was a lovely clear sky with a lovely sunset, and there was some beach (first time for about 10 days) so Spot could have a run, however the tide was coming in pretty fast and i nearly got cut off, the downside was it was bitterly cold.

On September 1st Micheal was in a car accident, someone ran into him and his car was assigned a write off although it was still drivable so today he bought a new car, he bought 1.8 M reg Cavalier

I have just finished The Last Lighthouse Keeper by Alan Titchmarsh
    A lovely book.
There was a boat called Sokai, when asked what it meant the owner said 'Spending Our Kids Anticipated Inheritance'

  • Remembrance Sunday

It has been a week of High Gales on the East Coast, with the coast on Flood Alert, although the danger has now past.
This morning i took Spot for our morning walk along the sea front, there had obviously been a very high tide, the tide line with seaweed and driftwood was well over the prom, and it was still a very high wind and it was very overcast, the sea looked terribly dark and bleak.
    tn_Wild Sea
Later on this morning, i met up with my Brownies for the Remembrance Day parade, luckily the clouds had blown away and the wind had dropped, it was still cold, but not too bad, while on the cliff top laying the wreaths at the cenotaph, i spotted some idiots out at sea windsurfing, i bet they were frozen.
    tn_Remembrance Day 2007

That is Charlotte in the pink jacket, holding the flag, although she could do with holding it straighter, and Sophie walking beside her.

We then had our usual sunday get together with the family and i had 10 for Roast Dinner, steven couldn't come as he was working.

  • Work

We do have strange customers at times, one lady came in complaining the shoes she bought were too big, i got down tightened the laces and she said they were fine now. Another customer came in and asked for some shoes to walk in, i felt like asking what else did she plan on doing with them.

It has been about 8 weeks now since i have been unwell, including all through pack holiday, in that time i have lost my voice completely twice,  keep having coughing fits, always talking with a hoarse gravelly voice, i have a sore chest and it hurts when i breathe, sometimes i am so cold, there seems no ever getting warm, i am tired all the time, sometimes there seems no end to it. I have not been to yoga class for ages, in case it does more harm than good, or i have a coughing fit which would be so embarrassing.

  • Saturday 3rd November 2007

I attended a Anglia Team conference, in my new role as Joint County PR advisor, i left home at 5.30am, to get to Norwich by 7.30am, to catch a bus to go to Cambridge for the conference.
It was an informative and interesting day, i got home about 7.30pm.

    Sunday 4th November
I worked in Calendar Club today, this evening we had a Firework Party, there was Kevin with girlfriend Lauren, Jude, Charlotte and Kira, Jenny, Andy, Sophie and Dylan. Steven was working. We also had the chocolate fountain going.

Me and Debbie had spent months organising a Victorian week, most of it happened while i was on pack holiday. I dressed up (well sort of). We had falconry display (which was very popular), entertainment, punch and judy, a visit by some vintage cycles and the Victorian Strollers, a reenactment group that dress up to create atmosphere. It was a lovely day, a pity more businesses didn't help though.

Our theme was festivals, we had a harvest festival, then Easter Day with an Easter Egg Hunt, then we had valentines day, and our last day was Christmas day with all the trimmings, including a visit from Father Christmas, and a full Christmas Dinner, it was a good week, everything went to plan , weather was good, i was disappointed that an assessor didn't attend though

Around this time, someone I knew from my Scouting/Guiding Connections Commit Suicide, he drove himself and his ageing dog off of Hunstanton's Cliffs, it was quite a shock, he used to be Stevens Scout Master.

I am nervous but excited, i am still concerned about time off on Saturdays, but i really want to do this, I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead, and knowing i am sharing the burden with someone else, eases the pressure.

It was a queer summer that year, or rather it was no summer at all.  Winter had extended its reach into August, the sun was scarcely seen, thick grey clouds covered the sky, bitter winds blew through towns and battered crops, storms of rain and hail, enlivened by occasional displays of thunder and lightning.  In many ways it was worse than winter.  The long hours of daylight denied people the consolation of darkness which would have hidden these miseries for a while.

Today I joined the Rainbows in my PR Hat at Banham Zoo, Jen also took 1st Hunstanton Rainbows, below is the press release i did.

This year, the younger section (age 5-7) of Girlguiding UK, the Rainbow Guides, are 20 years old. It was great to see so many well behaved, smiling children. Not even the rain shower, at lunch time, could dampen the spirits of these Rainbows.

Over 1200 Rainbows and their leaders from all over Norfolk, enjoyed a day of fun, friendship and celebration.

The day started at 10.30am and included Exclusive Amazing Animal Talks, where we were able to see and learn about animals close up, including the Kestrel, Ferret and Rats. They enjoyed Feeding Talks and rides upon the parks Safari Roadtrain.

The day came to a climax with a big Birthday Party at 3.00 – 4-30pm. Everyone was welcomed to the party by BBC presenter Carol Bundock, President of Girlguiding Norfolk and treated to fun and games with Razz the Clown. A large birthday cake was cut by Twins Alicia and Sophie, aged 7, from 3rd Thorpe Rainbows, and Eloise, aged 6, from 2nd Attleborough Rainbows who celebrated their birthdays on this magnificent day.

Each Rainbow unit designed a birthday card to be entered into a competition. 1st place was won by 1st Salhouse Rainbows, 2nd was 1st Brundall Rainbows and 3rd, 2nd Pakefield Rainbows.

The Rainbow Guides have adopted a Red Panda and the staff at Banham Zoo made a short presentation, about the Red Panda, ably assisted by Carol Bundock who joined in the the audience participation.

The antibiotics didn't appear to be clearing Dylan up completely, there was still infection, it was decided he needed to have his hips drained of poison but the Kings Lynn Hospital didn't have the capability to do this on a child this young, so he was transferred to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, for the procedure, he was operated on, quite quickly

  • Dylan in Hospital 30th May - 20th June 2007

tn_Dylan on ponyDylan was admitted to Kings Lynn hospital on the evening of 30th May, he was very poorly, no strength or energy. On the 8th June Andys parents left for home, then we heard that Dylan was to be transferred to Addenbrooks hospital, to have an operation to release Poisonous fluid from his hip joint, as the antibiotics didn't appear to be doing their job properly, he had the operation and it took time for his to recover he was eventually transferred back to Kings Lynn on Wednesday 13th June, and discharged for home on the 20th June, an awful 3 weeks where we virtually lived at the hospital
